ZBrush 6.0 – Our First Look at Pixologics Latest Update

I’m excited to share my first impressions of ZBrush 6.0, the latest update to Pixologic’s industry-leading digital sculpting software. As a 3D artist who has been using ZBrush for years, I was eager to get my hands on the new features and workflow improvements in this release.

New Features Overview

ZBrush 6.0 introduces several noteworthy new tools and capabilities:

Gizmo 3D

This is an interactive transformation tool that allows me to easily move, rotate, and scale models or parts of models in 3D space. I can use on-screen gizmos to manipulate my models more intuitively. This should really improve and speed up my workflow.

ZModeler Brushes

These new brushes in ZModeler give me more flexibility for directly sculpting on my models. There are brushes for pulling vertices, creating edge loops, extending surfaces, and more. I’m looking forward to integrating these into my modeling process.

ShadowBox

ShadowBox creates a shadow catch behind models to give the impression of grounding them in a scene. This should help add depth and realism to my sculpts. I’m excited to experiment with different lighting setups using ShadowBox.

PolyGroupIt

This useful new feature lets me automatically generate polygroups based on mesh topology. Since polygroups are essential for working efficiently in ZBrush, PolyGroupIt should really speed up my workflow.

ZPlaster

ZPlaster provides a set of tools for sculpting sharp details on models with a chiseling effect. The results have a nice plaster or porcelain look. I can see this being useful for certain hard surface models.

My First Impressions Using ZBrush 6.0

After installing ZBrush 6.0 and playing around with it for a few hours, here are some of my first impressions:

  • The Gizmo 3D tool is super intuitive for 3D transformations. I love being able to visually manipulate models right in the viewport. This is going to be a huge time saver.

  • The new ZModeler brushes seem great for making quick edits to models. I was able to easily add edge loops and pull vertices on a test model. Very nice additions.

  • ShadowBox creates nicely diffused shadows behind models. I set up a simple scene with a sphere and plane and the shadow grounding effect looks great.

  • PolyGroupIt worked flawlessly for generating polygroups based on my model topology. Another time saver that I’ll be using constantly.

  • ZPlaster has a cool scratchy look when used with light brush strokes. Seems like it will be perfect for adding fine details to hard surfaces.

Overall, I’m really impressed with the workflow enhancements in ZBrush 6.0. The new tools address some of my biggest pain points working in previous versions. I’m looking forward to pushing these new features to their limits in my projects going forward.

Here are some of the key improvements I see in ZBrush 6.0 for artists:

  • Intuitive 3D manipulations – The on-screen gizmos of Gizmo 3D allow me to intuitively move, rotate, and scale models directly in 3D space. Very user friendly.

These improvements should translate to better efficiency and more creativity in my ZBrush sculpting. I’m excited to see how they impact my work.

My early testing shows ZBrush 6.0 is packed with great workflow enhancements and new capabilities. Here are some closing thoughts:
