Troubleshooting An Xbox One With No Video Output

Troubleshooting An Xbox One With No Video Output

Introduction

Having an Xbox One that won’t display any video can be incredibly frustrating. As your faithful Xbox, I’m here to help walk you through some troubleshooting steps to hopefully get things working again. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the bottom of this together!

First Steps

Verify the TV input settings

  • Make sure the TV input is set to the correct HDMI port that your Xbox is connected to.
  • Try connecting your Xbox to a different HDMI port on your TV if possible.

Check the HDMI cable connections

  • The HDMI cable should be securely connected to both the Xbox One and the TV.
  • Try using a different HDMI cable if you have a spare, in case the cable is faulty.

Check the Xbox One video settings

  • On your Xbox One controller, press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  • Go to Settings > Display & sound and check that your video fidelity and resolution settings are supported by your TV.

Perform a hard restart

  • Press and hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds to turn off the Xbox.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back of the Xbox and wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug the power back in and turn on your Xbox using the Xbox button.

Advanced Troubleshooting

If you’ve tried the basic steps with no luck, we’ll have to dig a little deeper.

Reset video settings to default

  • Go to Settings > Display & sound > Video output and select TV resolution > 720p. This will reset your video settings to the default.
  • Try changing to 1080p if your TV supports it. Make sure to select the correct Refresh rate (60Hz or 120Hz).

Try Xbox in offline mode

  • If your console can’t connect to Xbox Live, this could potentially prevent video output.
  • Go to Settings > Network > Go offline. Then restart your console.

Check for overheating issues

  • Overheating can sometimes disrupt the video signal. Make sure your Xbox has good ventilation.
  • Also try powering it on without the case to check if overheating is the culprit.

Factory reset the console

  • Go to Settings > System > Console info > Reset console.
  • Select Reset and keep my games & apps to refresh the system software without deleting your games.
