The Consumer IoT Explosion: Must-Have Smart Gadgets in 2024

The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed the way we live and work. As more devices get connected, the IoT market is exploding with new products designed to make our lives easier, healthier, and more efficient. In 2024, the IoT revolution will be in full swing, with consumers adopting all kinds of smart gadgets for the home, health, travel and more.

Smart Home Devices

The smart home market is maturing quickly, with people automating everything from lighting and temperature to security and appliances. Here are some must-have IoT devices I predict every home will have in 2024:

Smart Speakers with Virtual Assistants

By 2024, smart speakers like Amazon Echo and Google Home will be ubiquitous. These voice-controlled speakers not only play music and set alarms, but also act as a hub to control other smart devices. The built-in virtual assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant understand natural language commands to look up information, place orders, manage schedules and more.

Smart Lighting

Smart light bulbs like Philips Hue are a simple way to automate home lighting. Using a smartphone app or voice controls, I can change colors, dimness and schedules. By 2024, I expect smart lighting to be standard in most rooms. Features like geofencing that turn on lights when I arrive home will be commonplace.

Smart Thermostats

Smart thermostats learn my heating/cooling preferences and automatically adjust temperatures. With a smart thermostat like Nest, I can remotely control temperatures via my phone, which saves energy when I’m away. By 2024, programming clunky thermostats manually will be obsolete.

Smart Appliances

Major appliances are getting smart upgrades too. My Samsung fridge alerts me if I’m out of milk or the door is left open. The Whirlpool app lets me start the laundry remotely and get notifications when a cycle ends. More tasks will be automated in the future, like refrigerators that track food expiry dates and order groceries for me.

Home Security Systems

Smart locks, cameras, motion sensors and alarm systems will make homes ultra-secure. For example, Deep Sentinel offers 24/7 monitoring with human guards who can warn off intruders through two-way audio. I expect DIY installations will give way to professionally monitored systems by 2024.

Smart Nursery Products

For parents, smart baby monitors and nursery gadgets are a must-have. The Nanit Plus not only streams HD video of my sleeping baby, but uses computer vision to analyze sleep patterns. Smart cribs like Snoo gently rock babies to sleep. And smart diapers from companies like Pampers let me track my baby’s vital signs.

Health & Fitness Gear

Our health-conscious lifestyles will drive demand for smart fitness and wellbeing products. Here are some useful gadgets I will rely on daily in 2024:

Smartwatches & Fitness Trackers

Smartwatches are moving beyond basic activity tracking to provide more health insights. For example, the Apple Watch Series 8 detects early heart rhythm problems like atrial fibrillation. Other watches have features like blood oxygen monitoring, ECG, skin temperature and fall detection. By 2024, smartwatches will be essential health tools.

Digital Thermometers

Smart thermometers like Kinsa use machine learning to predict how illnesses spread. By uploading my temperature reading, I help track contagious outbreaks in real-time. The Kinsa app or virtual assistant also provides medical guidance tailored for my symptoms. Digital thermometers will be as common as bathroom scales by 2024.

Smart Inhalers

Asthma inhalers will go digital too. Companies like Propeller Health and Adherium make smart sensors for existing inhalers to track usage. The paired mobile app can remind me when to take doses, identify triggers, share reports with my doctor and order refills. This transforms inhaler use from guesswork to actively managed care.

Hearables

Earbuds are evolving into smart hearing devices. Nuheara’s IQbuds Boost not only play audio but amplify speech and suppress background noise. They also track physical activity and vitals with inner-ear sensors. Expect hearables to monitor biomarkers and become health assistants by 2024.

Exoskeletons and Prosthetics

Healthcare exoskeletons help people with limited mobility rehabilitate and regain function. Lightweight, powered suits from companies like SuitX provide lift assistance and gait training. Advanced prosthetics like the Hero Arm are controlled with electrical muscle signals for natural-looking movements. By 2024, assistive exoskeletons will be widely used for rehabilitation and everyday activities.

Travel & Transportation

IoT transportationtech will keep us safe and connected on the go. These smart gadgets will change how I travel:

Self-Driving Cars

Autonomous vehiclesfrom companies like Waymo are alreadybeing tested on public roads. ButI believe mass adoption is still years away. By 2024, private self-driving car ownership will be limited, but robotaxi services in geo-fenced areas will be commonplace.

Smart Helmets

Smart bike and motorcycle helmets will gain popularity by 2024. CrossHelmet has headphones and a microphone built in for calls and music. Others like Skully AR-1 have a head-up display for navigation apps, rearview camera and blind spot detection. Helmets may even get brain computer interface tech for controlling devices with my mind!

Smart Luggage

Smarter travel starts with my luggage. Brands like Raden and Bluesmart make suitcases with location tracking, digital locks, Bluetooth and USB for charging devices. Some can even weigh themselves and follow me around like a robot. By 2024, I expect these features to be standard for security and convenience during travel.

Immersive Entertainment

In-flight entertainment will get a major upgrade with VR and AR. Startups like Immfly provide 3D movies and games on flights with a simple VR viewer. Airlines may even replace seatback screens with personalized entertainment beamed virtually right before my eyes.

The consumer IoT revolution is just getting started. As technology keeps improving, I look forward to experiencing a smarter, more connected world where mundane tasks and dangers are minimized. The only question is which gadgets will ultimately become indispensable tools in my daily life.
