Photoshop Gets New Sky Replacement and Neural Filters for Quicker Editing

Photoshop is getting some major upgrades that will help speed up and simplify the editing process. Here’s an overview of the key new features coming soon.

Sky Replacement Tool

Photoshop’s new Sky Replacement tool uses AI to instantly replace skies in photos with just one click.

How It Works

The Sky Replacement tool analyzes your photo to detect the sky area. You can then select a new sky from the library of options or upload your own sky photos. The tool automatically masks and inserts the new sky, matching lighting and perspective to create a realistic composite.

This is much faster than manually masking and compositing skies yourself. It saves time and gives great results for landscape shots.

Use Cases

The Sky Replacement tool is great when:

  • The original sky is overexposed or underexposed. You can swap it out for a more pleasing sky.
  • The photo was taken on an overcast day. Replace the flat gray sky with a dramatic stormy or sunset sky.
  • You want to alter the time of day or season. Change a daytime sky to a night sky.

It’s a powerful way to dramatically change the mood and feel of an image without complex compositing.

Neural Filters

Photoshop is also gaining a bunch of new AI-powered filters that intelligently alter photos with just one click.

Overview of New Filters

Some highlights of the new neural filters include:

  • Colorize – Adds color to black and white photos while preserving tones and textures.
  • Skin Smoothing – Subtly retouches skin while avoiding unrealistic results.
  • Super Zoom – Enhances image resolution for crisper details and fewer artifacts when zooming in.
  • Depth Blur – Creates depth of field blur effects based on depth maps.
  • Shake Reduction – Stabilizes motion blur from camera shake in handheld shots.

Benefits

These filters leverage AI to make complex edits in seconds with natural results. Some key benefits:

  • One click operation – No expertise needed to get great effects.
  • Intelligent editing – The algorithms understand image content to make appropriate adjustments.
  • Faster workflows – Drastically reduces editing time compared to manual methods.

The filters are like having a seasoned retoucher available with one click, automating time-consuming processes.

Availability

Adobe plans to launch the new Sky Replacement tool and Neural Filters in Fall 2020. They will be available in Photoshop on the desktop, as well as on the iPad and iPhone versions via Photoshop on the iPad and Photoshop Camera iOS apps.

These new intelligent features will streamline editing workflows for all types of Photoshop users. I’m looking forward to trying them out once released!
