One of the most exciting innovations in smartphone design is foldable displays. Several companies like Samsung and Motorola have already released foldable smartphones, but the technology is still in its early stages.
In 2024, I expect foldable displays to be more durable and affordable. New folding mechanisms and flexible display materials like plastic OLED will allow smartphones to fold and unfold smoothly without a crease. This will enable smartphones to transform between a compact 5-inch smartphone and an immersive 8-inch tablet.
Foldable smartphones will allow me to carry around a large screen in my pocket. I’ll no longer need to carry both a phone and tablet.

Another recent trend is under screen cameras that are hidden below the display. This creates a true full-screen experience without any notches or cutouts.
Companies like ZTE and Xiaomi have prototyped under screen cameras already. But current implementations still affect display quality above the camera.
By 2024, under screen cameras will evolve to capture high quality selfies without sacrificing the display. Smartphones with under screen cameras will provide me with stunning uninterrupted displays.
Advanced Biometrics
Biometric authentication like 3D facial recognition and in-display fingerprint sensors have become standard features on smartphones. But by 2024, biometrics will advanced even further through technologies like:
- Ultra sonic fingerprint sensors that accurately scan 3D fingerprints
- Facial recognition capable of detecting minute facial details, preventing spoofing
- Iris scanning for faster and more secure authentication
- ECG sensors that identify users by their unique cardiac rhythm
With these advances, unlocking my smartphone will happen instantly and seamlessly using biometrics. This added convenience and security will be a game changer.
AR/VR Capabilities
Some modern smartphones already offer basic augmented reality (AR) capabilities. But over the next few years, smartphones will transform into powerful AR and VR devices.
Dedicated AR/VR cameras with depth sensing will allow smartphones to blur the line between real and virtual. 5G connectivity will enable low latency AR experiences. And improved processors will allow AR graphics to be overlaid seamlessly onto the real world.
By 2024, I’ll be able to use my smartphone to visualize 3D holograms of objects, interact with virtual environments, and play hyper realistic AR games. AR shopping, navigation, and product previews will also become effortless.
