How To Fix Your Oculus Rift Headset Display Not Working

I recently ran into an issue where the display on my Oculus Rift headset was not turning on properly. This can be a frustrating problem, but fortunately there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to try and get your Rift working again. In this article, I’ll walk through all the potential solutions I tried to fix my Oculus Rift headset display.

Check Your Hardware Connections

The first thing to check whenever your Rift headset display is not turning on properly is the physical hardware connections. Here are the key things to verify:

  • HDMI Cable – Make sure the HDMI cable running from your headset to your PC or laptop is plugged in securely on both ends. Unplug and re-plug both ends of the cable. Try using a different HDMI cable if possible to rule out a faulty cable.

  • USB Cable – Check that the USB cable connecting your Rift headset to your PC/laptop is also plugged in properly on both sides. Unplug and re-insert the USB cable at both ends. Try using a different USB port on your computer if possible.

  • Headset Cable – Inspect the headset cable that runs from the side of the Rift around the back of the headband. Make sure it is plugged in properly and there is no damage. Unplug and re-seat the headset cable connection.

  • Sensors – If you are using Rift sensors for positional tracking, check that these are plugged in properly via USB. Try unplugging and plugging them back in.

Carefully checking all your cables and connections is the first step towards diagnosing your Rift display problem. Re-seating cables will often fix connectivity issues that prevent the headset display from functioning.

Restart Your Oculus Services

If your Rift headset display is still not working after checking all the hardware connections, the next thing to try is restarting the Oculus services on your computer. Here are the steps:

  1. Close the Oculus app if it is currently open.

  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the Task Manager.

  3. Select the Services tab.

  4. Locate the following services and restart them one by one:

    • Oculus VR Runtime Service
    • Oculus Display Driver Service
  5. After restarting the services, launch the Oculus app again and check if the headset display turns on.

Restarting the Oculus services essentially resets the connection between the Rift and your computer. This can resolve software issues that cause the display to malfunction. Make sure to close the Oculus software before restarting services.

Update Your Graphics Drivers

Outdated, corrupt or incompatible graphics drivers can also cause problems with the Rift headset display. I recommend checking for graphics driver updates:

  1. Open the Device Manager on your PC.

  2. Expand the Display adapters section.

  3. Right click on your graphics card device and choose Update driver.

  4. Select Search automatically for updated driver software to check and install any available updates.

  5. Restart your PC after the graphics driver update completes.

  6. Connect your Rift headset again and check if the display works now.

Updating to the latest graphics drivers ensures maximum compatibility and resolves bugs that can interfere with the headset display. Graphics driver conflicts are a common cause of Rift display issues.

Use Compatibility Mode

Enabling Compatibility Mode in the Oculus app may also help get a Rift headset display functioning again:

  1. Close the Oculus app if it is running.

  2. Right click on the Oculus shortcut on your desktop and select Properties.

  3. Go to the Compatibility tab.

  4. Check the box for Run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows 8 from the drop down menu.

  5. Click OK to save the changes.

  6. Launch the Oculus app again.

Compatibility Mode essentially tricks the app into thinking it is running in an older version of Windows that may have better compatibility. Try this tip if display issues persist.

Factory Reset Your Oculus

If you have tried all other troubleshooting steps and the Rift headset display is still not turning on, performing a factory reset on the headset is recommended:

  1. Open the Oculus app on your PC.

  2. Click Settings in the left menu.

  3. Select the Beta tab.

  4. Click Factory Reset. This will remove all apps and settings.

  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset process.

  6. Set up your Rift headset from scratch again and test if the display now works.

The factory reset erases any corrupted software or settings that could be interfering with the headset display. As a last resort, it’s worth trying this to possibly fix the issue.

Contact Oculus Support

If you have tried all troubleshooting tips and your Oculus Rift headset display is still not turning on, then it’s time to seek help from the Oculus Support team:

  • Visit the Oculus Support Center and submit a ticket describing your display issue.

  • Chat to Oculus Support or look for fixes in their knowledge base articles.
