At the heart of FSU’s technological revolution lies the Innovation Hub, a collaborative workspace that fosters creativity, exploration, and the seamless integration of emerging technologies into the academic experience. One of the standout initiatives spearheaded by the Innovation Hub is the Faculty Innovator Coffee Chats, a biweekly event that brings together faculty and staff from across the university to share insights, discuss opportunities, and explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in their respective disciplines.
Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, these informal gatherings provide a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-pollination of ideas. As Jim Clark, the provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, explains, “It’s crucial to harness the collective wisdom of our faculty to explore the potential of AI. Testing AI and building a community of expertise at Florida State University is essential, rather than imposing it from the top down.”
The Coffee Chats have been particularly focused on the implications and applications of generative AI, a cutting-edge form of AI that can generate new content, such as text or art. Faculty members from various departments have shared how they are incorporating these powerful tools into their research and teaching, sparking insightful discussions and fostering a culture of innovation.
“Innovation happens at those boundaries, at the liminal edges, and by talking to people outside of your usual field of study,” says Paul Marty, FSU’s first associate vice provost for academic innovation. “We get so entrenched in our own work that it’s sometimes hard to see it from an outside perspective. When you talk to a professor from another department or college about what you’re doing in a completely different field, you can see how they might apply it to their own work.”
These Coffee Chats have covered a wide range of topics, from the use of AI in healthcare and the implications of academic integrity, to the intersection of AI and the arts. The interdisciplinary nature of these discussions has been instrumental in helping faculty members see the potential applications of emerging technologies beyond their own areas of expertise.
Harnessing the Power of AI in the Classroom
As part of its commitment to technological advancement, FSU has also established the Artificial Intelligence in Education Advisory Committee (AIEAC), a cross-campus initiative aimed at evaluating the impact of AI on teaching and learning. Marty, who leads this effort, is focused on the importance of using AI tools to complement human work, rather than replace it.
“The reason everyone is talking about AI now is that the new tools that have come out, particularly with the generative AI tools, have brought this power now to everybody,” Marty explains. “Everyone has access to it, and it’s no longer just a small core group of scientists and researchers – now the general public has access to unbelievable AI tools.”
To explore the potential of AI in the classroom, Marty has partnered with Microsoft to pilot test Microsoft Copilot in the Classroom. This initiative aims to understand how AI can be effectively integrated into course materials, serving as an interactive resource for students and enhancing the overall learning experience.
“We are excited about the potential of this pilot test to improve our understanding of the role of AI in higher education and look forward to sharing our experiences about what worked, what didn’t, and how we can improve the software to make it more useful for our faculty and our students in the future,” Marty says.
Additionally, the AIEAC is considering ways to restructure coursework to push students beyond the capabilities of AI, ensuring that they develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
Diverse Technological Resources Across Campus
Beyond the groundbreaking initiatives spearheaded by the Innovation Hub, FSU boasts a wealth of campus-wide technological resources that cater to the diverse needs of its students, faculty, and staff.
The Metal Factory
Nestled on the west side of the Technology building, the Metal Factory is a hub of creativity and hands-on learning. This state-of-the-art facility provides access to a wide range of equipment, including video cameras, digital cameras, video recorder tripods, and headphones. The Metal Factory is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and can be accessed by students enrolled in ITLS (Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences) courses.
The ITLS Design Lab
The ITLS Design Lab, located within the Technology building, offers even more specialized resources for students. This space features a Brother SE400 Combination Computerized Sewing and 4×4 Embroidery Machine, which is available for use from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. Students can reserve the lab through the ITLS Design Lab website reservation system.
Campus-Wide Technology Support
In addition to these specialized facilities, FSU provides comprehensive technology support and resources to its entire campus community. From the university’s IT services, which offer assistance with a wide range of technical issues, to the wealth of online resources and guides available through the library system, students, faculty, and staff can access the support they need to thrive in a technology-driven academic environment.
