Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior to Understand Cheating Intentions

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing students’ willingness to use ChatGPT for academic cheating, this article applies the theory of planned behavior (TPB). The TPB posits that an individual’s intentions to perform a specific behavior are shaped by their attitudes toward the behavior, their perception of social norms, and their perceived behavioral control.

By leveraging this well-established theoretical framework, we can explore the psychological drivers behind students’ decisions to use ChatGPT for unethical academic purposes. This longitudinal study examines the relationship between attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions, as well as the impact of intentions on actual future behavior, while controlling for the influence of past usage.

Methodology and Key Findings

The study, which received ethical approval, involved 610 students from an Austrian university who completed an initial survey measuring their attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and intentions regarding the use of ChatGPT for academic cheating.
