28. How To Connect Two Computers Using Ethernet Cable

Connecting two computers using an Ethernet cable is a simple way to create a small local area network (LAN). This allows the computers to share files and access each others’ devices. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to connect two computers using an Ethernet cable:

What You Need

  • Two computers with Ethernet ports
  • Ethernet cable (CAT5 or CAT6)
  • Router (optional)

Step 1: Check the Ethernet Ports

First, check that both computers have an Ethernet port. This is usually located on the back or side of a desktop computer. For laptops, the Ethernet port may be located on the side or back. The Ethernet port looks like a larger telephone jack and will likely have “Ethernet” or a network symbol next to it. If one or both computers do not have an Ethernet port, you will not be able to connect them directly.

Step 2: Obtain an Ethernet Cable

Next, you will need an Ethernet cable, also called a network cable. This is a CAT5 or CAT6 cable that has RJ45 connectors on each end. It looks similar to a phone cable. Make sure the cable is long enough to run between the two computers.

Step 3: Connect the Computers

Now connect the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet ports on each computer. The connectors should click into place. Make sure the cable is securely inserted into each port.

Step 4: Configure the Network Settings

On both computers, open the network settings and configure the following:

  • Set connection to use Ethernet or local area network
  • Enable sharing and discovery so the computers can access each others’ files and devices
  • Assign IP addresses in the same network range (e.g. 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2)

Step 5: Share Files and Printers (Optional)

To share files and printers between the networked computers:

  • On the sharing computer, select the files/folders or printers you want to share
  • Give access permission to the other computer
  • On the accessing computer, look for shared items and map drives/printers

Now you can access shared files and printers just like they were locally connected.

Connecting through a Router (Optional)

For a more robust network, connect both computers to a router using Ethernet cables. This allows internet access along with file and printer sharing. Follow the same steps to connect the computers to the router’s LAN ports and configure sharing.

Connecting two computers on a home network is that easy! With an Ethernet cable, you can quickly share files and resources. Just be sure both computers have Ethernet ports before connecting them together.
