To stand out, we are looking for innovation – especially when it comes to new technologies. In order to attract customers to ‘something new’, manufacturers are beginning to use folding screens. We are talking about the Motorola RAZR smartphone. These types of displays are also entering the world of tablets and laptops. ThinkPad X1 Fold is the world’s first folding personal computer. Is this how the future will look like?
When you look at ThinkPad X1 Fold for the first time, you can ask yourself: Who was it for? Is there any specific audience that will be interested in this model? In fact, everyone can adopt this equipment to their needs, because it is mobile and has efficient components, especially for such a miniature housing. The screen’s flexibility makes X1 Fold a great business partner. It will also be appreciated by people who travel frequently.
It often happens that when buying a tablet we miss the keyboard. Using the split-screen option offered by ThinkPad X1 Fold may be a solution to this problem. Let us analyze the other features of this model.
Two devices closed in one housing…
…and maybe more, because the folding screen hides many possibilities. The OLED screen, 13.3 inches in size and 2K resolution, allows you to comfortably browse the web, email, watch movies or series. In order not to have to hold the X1 Fold in our hands all the time we can use an easel built into a leather case, which should make it much easier to use the device at home or in the office. It is enough to bend the screen to divide the Windows desktop. In this way, as the name suggests, we will be able to run two windows simultaneously. This will enable multi-tasking, taking notes or comparing the contents of two pages. Is it true that the bendable OLED panel is practical?
It is time to turn the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold ninety degrees. Thanks to this operation, the tablet is transformed into an ultrabook. It is worth adding at this point that the computer can set the orientation of the windows on the desktop by itself. If we want to reply to an email or talk using one of the instant messengers, we can easily display the on-screen keyboard (optimized for Windows 10), which will take up less than half a screen.
For fans of traditional “clicks”, there is a dedicated, wireless Lenovo Fold Mini keyboard. Interestingly, we can “pin” it to the screen to use the ThinkPad X1 Fold as an ultrabook. Just “unfold” the screen, place it on your desk and use the keyboard as an additional, wireless component. As you can see, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is a multi-tasking device – ideal for work, study, entertainment and other purposes. gameplay? Let’s see what’s inside the case.
Parameters that many ultrabooks wouldn’t be proud of
The manufacturer has made sure that ThinkPad X1 Fold stands out not only for its original appearance but also allows for effective work. That is why the Core i5 processor from Intel Hybrid Technology was installed on the motherboard. What is this technology? In short, the components are much smaller and the CPU with Intel Hybrid Technology uses much less power than “traditional” models. In addition, in ThinkPad X1 Fold you will find 8 GB of LPDDR4X memory, which has a clock frequency of 4267 MHz. In the case of our data carrier, we are talking about an M.2 NVMe SSD, which can have a maximum of 1 TB of memory. It is worth noting that in the case of the latest version of i5 we also have at our disposal the Intel UHD 11-generation graphics. Admittedly, this is an integrated chipset, but it should cope with various graphic applications and even games such as CS: GO or Diablo III. Of course, we are talking about much older titles, but who expects to launch new games on a mobile device. After all, Counter-Strike or the Diablo series are cult titles.
Since the computer can be used for work or remote learning, it is worth noting the built-in camera. The 5 Mpix HD lens ensures high quality of video material, thanks to which the viewers will be able to enjoy an image free of noise and distortion. Four microphones will also help in proper reception. The housing also includes an infrared hybrid camera, thanks to which we will be able to use the Windows Hello function, which allows us to unlock our profile in the system with a face scan. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is also designed to be used for entertainment, so the manufacturer decided to use sound in Dolby Atmos Speaker System technology. The WLAN Wi-Fi 6 802.11 AX card (optional WWAN CAT20 (5G/LTE)) is primarily responsible for wireless communication. With Bluetooth 5.1 we can connect additional peripherals such as mouse, pen and headphones. What about the battery? The used 50 Wh battery provides over ten hours of video playback. Its high performance can be confirmed by a test with MobileMark 2018. Finally, the X1 Fold has reached almost nine hours of operation.
Let’s take a closer look at ThinkPad X1 Fold.
We already know what this equipment can be used for. We have learned its technical parameters, so it is time to check the input and output ports, which the manufacturer has installed on the device’s housing. Let’s start with the sockets. ThinkPad X1 Fold is equipped with two USB ports type C 3.2 Gen 2. Optionally, we also have (if we have an LTE modem) a slot for nano-SIM cards. This model can also boast of cooperation with USB 3.0 Type-C Dock, which must be purchased separately. Do not forget that this is a ThinkPad, which is known for its exemplary durability. This is also the case here because the manufacturer had to develop the whole construction from scratch, including the new cooling system. Under the 13.3-inch OLED touch screen (brightness at 300 rivets) the mainboard was placed. A cooling system was also built-in, which distributes the heat generated by the components. The whole is covered by a frame, which protects the equipment from damage. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is not only durable but also elegant. The manufacturer used a leather case. It is worth mentioning that thanks to it we gain not only an interesting design but also adds convenience in the form of a stand. We should also appreciate the weight – less than a kilogram – and the size of the device – 27.8 mm x 158.2 mm x 236 mm (H x W x D). This allows us to take the ThinkPad X1 Fold with us virtually anywhere – the equipment will not take up much space in your backpack or suitcase.
Does ThinkPad X1 Fold show us what the future of computers will look like?
Looking at Lenovo’s new work, we can safely say that innovation is combined with practicality. It is true that the concept is only beginning to cross the technological path, but it can already be said today that folding screens can be the future of computers. Why? First and foremost, OLED offers very great opportunities for personalisation. Do we want a large screen? We place the ThinkPad X1 Fold horizontally with the display unfolded, put an additional keyboard on the desk and you can enjoy a large diagonal in comfortable conditions (in this case we are talking about 13.3 inches). Do we need to improve the graphic design? We use a dedicated Lenovo Mod Pen and… draw. We are on the move, but do we want to check the mail quickly, correct notes or analyze two different spreadsheets? We bend the screen slightly and the software automatically divides the windows into two parts. We see a lot of data on it (after all, we have 2K resolution available) while keeping the device compact. When we want to reply to a message, add some notes or simply create a text, we fold the hardware and get a virtual keyboard at the bottom and a working screen at the top. If we are not used to the keys, we can choose a dedicated keyboard model which we will attach to the device with magnets. As you can see, the ThinkPad X1 Fold is the future. Thanks to it we can work more efficiently and we do not need a large and heavy laptop or PC. X1 Fold has all the most important features, which will allow us to work and learn more effectively, as well as for a moment of entertainment in the form of reading an e-book or an interesting film or series.
